At the R.A. Brown Ranch, we work hard everyday to provide excellent quality cattle, made up of sound genetics from the breed leaders. Our ranch is focused on four breeds of cattle that perform well for us. Please select the breed name below to view more information and photos.

  • Angus

Our Angus herd has come to the forefront of the breed in the past decade. We attribute this to disciplined breeding strategies of using proven AI sires generation after generation along with sampling the best young bulls we can use via natural service. We generally use these young bulls for only one or two seasons and then sell them in our sale. We select for calving ease with high growth in a moderately framed package, plus strong carcass traits, reproductive efficiency and adaptability traits to help them perform in hot and harsh climates.

Our base cowherd originally came from Ocala, FL in 1988, where they had been adapting and producing for many years in that hot & humid environment. We have continued to breed these cattle to the top, proven AI sires that fit our customer’s needs and climates. We expanded our herd again in 1997 through a partnership with the Gardiner Angus Ranch family. This cowherd originated with embryos from some of the Gardiner’s top donor females.

You will also find us utilizing an extensive embryo transfer program. Gary Mathiews, (formerly our foreman at R.A. Brown Ranch), has certainly turned the crank on mass multiplying our top young females with his excellent ET work.

Our Angus bulls are as good as you’ll find anywhere in the country....genetically superior, performance tested and yet developed in a way that you’ll reap the benefits of a bull designed to cover the countryside without falling apart. We plan to continue our disciplined approach of producing the best Angus genetics, designed to improve profits for you, our customers. All Angus bulls purchased from R.A. Brown Ranch are transferred into the name of our customer, making the calves out of these sires eligible for the Angus Source program and a majority of them eligible for Top Dollar Angus.

    Strengths of Angus:

    • Moderate mature size… lower maintenance costs
    • Popular…strong market demand for Angus sired calves
    • Growth...puts the go power in them
    • Angus Source Program….all of the calves out of registered Angus bulls are eligible

  • Red Angus

Red Angus is the most trouble free herd in our purebred program. We love their natural thickness, uniformity, fleshing ability and tremendous fertility. With some of the most sought after donors in the industry and some of our herd bulls in AI stud including, Prestigious, Pursuit, Pacesetter, Redemption, Legend, Unmatched, Paramount, Premier, Synergy, Better Answer, Assurance, Commitment, Covenant, Tugboat,  Brown Heritage, Norseman King, Celebration, Mission Statement, Vacation, Cheyenne, Good One, Made Right, and Major League, our Red Angus herd has come to the forefront of the industry. We attribute this to disciplined breeding strategies of stacking proven AI sires, generation after generation, along with owning the best breeding stock we can find. We design these cattle to have calving ease with high growth in a moderately framed package, plus strong carcass traits, superior reproductive efficiency and adaptability to hot and harsh climates.

The base of our Red Angus herd came from Roy Beeby, who had been performance testing his, moderate sized, highly fertile herd for 35 years with strict selection for calving ease and continuous, short calving intervals. We took this herd to a whole new level of performance with top AI sires. Ten years later we gave our herd another boost by acquiring the pick of Leachman’s Elite Nucleus herd and coming home with 17 of the best females in the entire breed. Since then we have been mass multiplying these top females through embryo transfer, resulting in many of these superior animals in the sale today.

Phase three has been to infuse the most superior Black Angus genetics into our Red Angus herd. We will continue to use proven, high accuracy sires to provide you, our customer, with animals that are multiple generations of predictable, and profitable cattle.

All of the Red Angus bulls purchased at R.A. Brown Ranch have papers transferred making their calf crops eligible for the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification program and most of them for Top Dollar Angus. It has been very rewarding to be a part of this performance driven breed. It is amazing how “on target” the early pioneers of Red Angus were. Their quest for high quality, performance cattle, continues today within the members of the Red Angus Association and the philosophy of  staff and leadership. We are thankful for the opportunity to have served the breed as a National Board Member and 2008-2010 National President and continue serving on many committees today.

    Strengths of Red Angus:

    • High carcass quality for both marbling and tenderness
    • Light birth weight… Excellent calving ease
    • Moderate mature size/easy keeping females with lower maintenance costs
    • Reproductive efficiency - the best of all our pure breeds
    • Popular…strong market demand

  • SimAngus™

SimAngus ... the very best of Angus, Red Angus and Simmental genetics combined into one. The breed complementarity is fantastic. You get the benefits of what each breed has to offer.

Angus & Red Angus: carcass quality, calving ease, easy keeping, and high reproductive efficiency.

Simmental: carcass yield, added growth, milk and muscle.

Our Simmental herd has been bred for almost five decades to produce maximum growth in an optimum sized animal.

    How to Best Use Them:
Using hybrid sires of superior genetics, (just like these bulls) is what the pork and poultry industries are doing to reach all new records for production and customer satisfaction. Many cattle producers are seeing the same results by using these hybrid bulls. Use them with confidence just like you do purebred sires. Superior genetics have been stacked in from both sides of their pedigree, generation after generation. They work great on English and English cross cows to keep the percentage of English genetics at half or more, maintaining and improving their superior carcass quality, easy fleshing ability and reproductive efficiency. The 1/8 to 1/4 Simmental in the resulting calves will increase their growth, muscle and yield grade while simultaneously giving you the opportunity to keep replacement heifers with added milk, yet they can still fit your environment. If your cows are ½ Continental and you want to keep them there, then these bulls will keep you there and make the calves even better because of the superior genetics bred into these hybrid bulls.

Here’s a promise you can take to the bank....using all of our knowledge and experience in these three breeds, we will continue to give you access to what we think are the best of “three worlds” in the form of SimAngus herd sires. You’ll see more of these in the years to come as we grow this segment of our seedstock herd.

  • Hotlander™

We developed the Hotlander™ composite in the late 1980’s with the help of experts like Dr. Keith Gregory of the U.S. Meat Anima lResearch Center and Dr. Ronnie Green, Professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics.  All things considered, in tough, hot climates, the Hotlander™ cattle do more things right than any other cattle we have ever seen. They are being used all over the southern half of the U.S., from Florida to California, as well as Mexico, South America and Australia.

    Reproductive Efficiency

The reproductive efficiency of the cattle is absolutely amazing. They breed extremely well as yearling heifers to calve at 23-25 months of age. The two year old heifers have continually weaned from 50-61% of their body weight and even during three years of a 5-year drought, we’ve had a 100% rebreed on two year old heifers nursing their first calf. The longevity of the females appears to be very good and udder quality is fantastic.

    Carcass Quality and Yield

The cattle have fed well in the feedlot and carcass data is impressive. They are high red meat yield cattle, averaging over 70% Yield Grade 1s & 2s. Quality grade has also been good, averaging about 67% Choice and better. Their beef is also very tender. We had 99 steers in an NCA tenderness project comparing them to SimAngus, Brangus, Braford, and Simbrah. The Hotlander™ cattle’s Warner Bratzler Shear force averaged only 5.4 pounds with all Hotlanders™ testing in the acceptable range. The Hotlander™ and SimAngus cattle were right together and significantly more tender than all three of the 3/8 Brahman breeds. This is a home run for Hotlander™, because they are heat tolerant cattle with excellent carcass traits, especially tenderness.

    Simple Composite Breeding

We love the disposition of the cattle and they remain very uniform through multiple generations of breeding Hotlander™ cows to Hotlander™ bulls. This is one of the best things about composite breeding. It is very easy. You just use the bulls and cows just as if they were purebreds, like breeding Angus to Angus. However you get the benefits of crossbreeding like breed complementarity and heterosis (hybrid vigor). Breed complementarity is getting traits from each breed expressed in the composite offspring. Heterosis is the increase in performance due to crossbreeding. The benefits of heterosis include: improved reproductive efficiency, longevity, faster growth and more milk. With composite breeding you get these benefits plus the uniformity of each calf crop and the simplicity of breeding them like a purebred herd of cattle.

    Constant Improvement

The key to keeping the benefits of crossbreeding in a composite herd are to maintain outcross genetics, and we do that for you. We continue to put new genetics in from all 4 breeds (see diagram on the next page). We are now doing this by producing Senesim (Senepol X Simmental) bulls to use on Brangus cows to get new and improved Hotlander™ genetics. In addition, we are now making Hotlander Plus™ bulls with the added marketability and popularity of the Angus and Red Angus to make them 5/8 AN, 1/8 Br, 1/8 SM, 1/8 SE. This allows us to maintain the heterosis while also taking advantage of all of the genetic advancement being made in each of the four pure breeds. This may sound complicated, but leave all of that up to us. We are doing it to continually improve on the Hotlander™ cattle. Our goal is to improve your profits while simplifying your management at the same time with easy-to-use breeding strategies.

Benefits of Hybrid Bulls and Cows

We have been taught for generations to use crossbred cows because of their advantages in reproductive efficiency, fertility, longevity, soundness and increased production. The reality is that we have all of the same advantages in hybrid bulls, plus they have increased libido or sex-drive. Using hybrid sires of superior genetics, (just like these bulls) is what the pork and poultry industry are doing to reach all new records for production and customer satisfaction. Many cattle producers are seeing the same results by using these hybrid bulls. Use them with confidence just like you do purebred sires.

    How to Best Use Them

Hotlander™ bulls can be used on any breed of cow. They work great on crossbred cows like Braford, Brangus, Beefmaster and Santa Gertrudis. Hotlander™ bulls bred to these Brahman x English cows will improve their growth, fertility and reproductive efficiency as well as carcass quality, yield and tenderness. The beautiful part is that they also allow you to keep heat tolerant replacement females that will work very well in your environment. Plus, with a planned crossbreeding program like this, the calves will be very uniform and stay that way generation after generation. Within three generations, your cattle will be bred up to purebred Hotlander™ status.

Hotlander™ bulls can also be used on English and English cross cows that do not have any Brahman influence. These bulls are very versatile. We will say it again. In tough environments, Hotlander™ cattle do more things right than any other breed of cattle that we have ever known.

    How to Buy Hotlander Cattle
